Tesla’s Robotaxi Service to Launch in Austin: Ambitious Plans Amid Safety Concerns
Tesla’s foray into the autonomous driving realm has taken a significant Leapforward. A video on social media platform X showed a Tesla Model Y marked with”Robotaxi” conducting public – road tests in Austin, Texas, with no driver atthe WHEEl. This sighting caught wide – spread attention.
- Tesla’s Announcements : Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the official Tesla account shared the video, confirming the June 22 launch of the Robotaxi service in Austin. The date may be adjusted for safety reasons. Additionally, Musk rEVEaled that the first autonomous delivery of a Tesla vehicle from the factory to a cusTomer is expected on June 28.
- Robotaxi Project Details : Based on the Model Y, the Robotaxi project will utilize the latest version of the fully self – driving (FSD) unsupervised system. All Tesla vehicles leaving the factory are capable of unsupervised autonomous driving, making every Tesla a potential part of the Robotaxi fleet. Initially, 10 Model Ys will start the service in specific areas of Austin, monitored remotely by Tesla employees.
- Expansion Plans : If the tests are successful, Tesla aims to quickly expand the fleet to thousands of vehicles and extend the service to other cities such as Los Angeles.
- Market Concerns : However, the market and regulatory bodies have concerns about Tesla’s autonomous driving safety and technological maturity. In contrast, Waymo, under Alphabet, has a well – established autonomous taxi service in places like Austin, with millions of miles of test data. Tesla’s testing period is relatively short, with some saying it has only done a few days of autonomous driving tests, far from industry standards.
