At the upcoming 2025 global dEVEloper conference (WWDC), Apple intends tooffer its device – based AI models to third – party developers. This move aimsto spur the creation of innovative applications and Augment Apple’sintelligent features. To achieve this, Apple is crafting a softwaredevelopment kit (SDK), enabling developers to leverage its small – scale, device – centered AI models rather than more advanced cloud – based ones, astrategy akin to Google’s introduction of gemini Nano AI on Android.
By opening its Apple Intelligence technology, Apple hopes to trigger a surgeof new intelligent applications. Currently, developers’ access to Apple’sintelligent functions is restricted. They can only integrate a limited set, such as AI writing tools and image generators, and have yet to use Apple’score AI models (Apple Foundation Models) for custom feature building.
In the AI arena, Apple has lagged behind rivals like Samsung and Google, whichhave already equipped their devices with advanced AI capabilities. Earlierthis year, Apple halted its AI news summary feature due to errors that irkedmedia outlets. Moreover, its Genmoji tool underperformed, and Siri updatesfaced delays.
Opening its models can motivate developers to create unique applications, thusboosting the allure of iPhones and Macs. The opening of AI models isanticipated to be a major announcement at NEXt month’s WWDC. Additionally,Apple has plans for a significant software redesign of iPhones, iPads, andMacs, codenamed “Solarium,” to make these systems more unified and visuallysimilar to visionOS on its Vision Pro head – mounted device.
Developers may get new Siri tools to build voice – driven features, thoughthis might not occur until iOS19 release. There are also indications of otherAI projects, including an energy – efficient AI mode and an AI healthapplication for a virtual health coach, with the Latter expected in 2026.
